Handling the Noise Level to Help your Gym Students Cope

Even if you use music at your gym, there are other issues you should address. The most annoying problem concerns loud noise that could cause hearing damage. You may play the right exercise music at your gym classroom. But, you may be offering your class next to a spin room without enough walls to absorb sound. While you could politely ask fellow fitness instructors to turn down their music a bit, this might just work for a while. Then the next thing you know is that you are dealing with the same noise problem over and over.

Some instructors may take you seriously and find ways to reduce the noise level they are creating. Although you might handle the noise, some of your students might keep on complaining and this will make you feel helpless and guilty. If things get this bad, you might want to revisit the rules provided by OSHA to owners of different workplaces. Very loud noise is a form of pollution that could cause hearing issues and mental disturbance that might interfere with your students’ level of concentration.

Show the OSHA regulations to the management so that it can consider doing major changes to the entire building. Fellow instructors may not be the problem. Even if they lower their exercise music, you might find that noises from different areas of the building are still amounting to a distraction that most gym students cannot cope with. The management or owners of the company you work for an instructor might have to add sound absorbers to the building.

Before bringing the issue to the attention of the management, engage the other instructors at the gym. All of you could download an app to read the decibel levels with. This data could help you prove that the noise is at unsafe level. If the instructors play the music at the same level they always do, you will be able to deduce whether the noise they create is the root of the problem. But the problem of high pitched noise is experienced everywhere.

It is not surprising to find unbearable noise levels at the venues of most fitness conferences. So it seems that most fitness experts are not even aware of the ear shattering noises they cause. Intolerable noise level can cause some people to stop taking their gym classes. As a result, you should act now by finding ways to minimise noise in your classroom. By so doing, you will protect your clients from the hearing damage. Some instructors may refuse to lower the volume claiming that their students want it loud.

If you have to follow the law to stop them, maybe you should go ahead.  This way they might be forced do something to the ceiling height and the sound baffle panels. According to IDEA Health and Fitness Association’s 1997 guide, the following rules on music volume should be followed in any fitness class. When instructing a group of people, the music volume and intensity should not exceed ninety decibels. The instructor’s voice should be loud enough to be heard by the students. But, it should not exceed 100dB. And if the instructor’s voice will be at 100dB, their session should not last beyond an hour.

Finally, OSHA-based standards provided by IDEA require the instructor to find quieter and effective means of motivating their clients. In group fitness classes, music serves different purposes. In addition to assisting the instructor create a well-planned class, music provides the beats and phrases to motivate people with. However, music stops to be helpful when it creates a deafening noise. Students stop enjoying the exercise music and get lethargic and tired before their class ends. Thus, you have no choice but to lessen the noise level.
